Savitribai Phule was the country’s first female teacher. She also worked in India as a social reformer, anti-abortion activist, and poet. She was born in the state of Maharashtra.

Early Years

Her parents forced her to marry Jyotirao Phule, who was two years her senior, when she was nine years old; Jyotiba was twelve years old in 1840. They were going through the motions of their married life, but without a kid. Yes, the couple did not have a kid of their own, but after a year, they adopted Yashwantrao, the son of a Brahmin widow.

Career

Her wife was taught to read and write by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. This set her apart from other women of her day, since education for girls was not valued at the time.

Savitribai Phule had always desired to improve women’s conditions, so she decided to educate other girls, and as a result, she became India’s first female teacher.

Savitri Bai Phule founded a girls school at Bhide Wada, Pune, with the assistance of her husband. Savitribai and Jyotiba Phule founded 18 girls’ schools throughout the course of their lives.

During that time, every marriage had a significant age difference. As a result, it was typical for the girl to become a widow at a young age. This kid widow was sexually assaulted as well as made to shave their head. As a consequence, individuals are forced to bear pregnancies that they do not desire.

Savitribai spoke up against the social injustice that had been perpetrated on them. To shield the pregnant widow from the traditional community, the couple established a widow care facility called Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha. They established this care facility in their home.

Untouchability was another kind of social crime prevalent on that particular day. Savitribai even dug a well in her hose for the untouchables to collect water.

Savitribai Phule used to compose a poem in response to gender prejudice. Kavya Phule and Bhavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar were two of her novels that were published all over the globe.

Death

A third pandemic plague broke out in the region, and Savitribai and her adoptive son Yashwantrao established a clinic for those who were ill or afflicted by the disease.

Savitribai became infected with the illness while servicing the afflicted patient, and she died on March 10, 1987.
